💦 Songkran Festival Bangkok Experience: My One Day Adventure on Khao San Road
Thailand is famous for its vibrant culture, but nothing comes close to the madness and excitement of the Songkran Festival in Bangkok. It was celebrated from 13th to 15th April in 2026.
This is not just a festival — it’s a full-blown water war on the streets, and I experienced it right in the heart of Bangkok at Khao San Road.
But what made my experience even more intense was the journey leading up to it.
🚌 Overnight Journey from Ao Nang to Bangkok
Before reaching Bangkok, I was in Ao Nang (Krabi)12 and 13th April, also enjoyed Songkran at 13th with enjoying the beach vibes. But to experience Songkran in Bangkok, I booked an overnight bus — one of the most budget-friendly travel options in Thailand.
The journey was long, tiring, and completely overnight. Traveling this way is not easy, but it saves both time and money — something every backpacker understands.
After hours of travel, I finally reached Bangkok early in the morning. I booked my bus online from below ( Advance booking prefred )

🌅 Reaching Bangkok at 6 AM
I arrived in Bangkok around 6:00 AM, completely exhausted but excited at the same time.
The streets were calm, almost empty — a complete contrast to what the city would turn into just a few hours later during Songkran.
Since I had limited time (my flight was at 7 PM), I had to make every moment count.

💦 Songkran Festival at Khao San Road – The Craziest Experience
y afternoon, the real action began.
I headed straight to Khao San Road, and what I saw was absolutely unbelievable.
The entire street had transformed into:
- A massive water battlefield
- Loud music and non-stop dancing everywhere
- People from all over the world celebrating together
The energy was insane. Every few seconds, someone would splash water on you — sometimes with a water gun, sometimes with a bucket, and sometimes even with full hoses!
During the Songkran Festival, no one stays dry. It’s not just fun — it’s a tradition deeply rooted in Thai culture.
Why is Songkran Celebrated?
Songkran marks the Thai New Year and is celebrated as a symbol of fresh beginnings and purification. Traditionally, people used to pour water gently on elders and Buddha statues as a sign of respect and to wash away bad luck from the previous year.
Over time, this tradition evolved into the world’s biggest water festival — especially in places like Khao San Road, where it turns into a global celebration.
Back on the streets, it didn’t matter where you were from — everyone was part of the celebration.
Strangers became friends, laughter was everywhere, and for those few hours, the whole world felt united in one giant water party.
This was easily one of the most fun, wild, and unforgettable travel experiences I’ve ever had.
⏳ One Day Bangkok Itinerary During Songkran
Even though I had just one day in Bangkok, here’s how I made it count:
- Early morning arrival (6 AM)
- Quick rest at hostel
- Exploring nearby streets
- Afternoon to evening: Full Songkran celebration
- Evening: Headed to airport for 7 PM flight
This proves you don’t need many days — even one day in Bangkok during Songkran can be unforgettable.
✈️ Final Thoughts: Is Songkran Festival in Bangkok Worth It?
Absolutely YES.
If you’re planning a Thailand trip, experiencing Songkran in Bangkok should be at the top of your list.
From an overnight journey from Ao Nang to dancing on the streets of Khao San Road — this trip was fast, chaotic, and unforgettable.
